The most common way to use the Model is to conduct a self-assessment. It is generally recognised that there are six different types of self-assessment. The different approaches reflect a trade-off between the extent to which they are demanding on time and cost and the robustness of the inputs (the factual evidence available) and outputs (the strengths and areas for improvement identified).

The important thing is for every organisation to choose the approach that is best suited to its requirements at any given stage.

All the Enablers evidence that is collated in a self-assessment is evaluated against three headline measures. These are Approach, Deployment and Assessment & Review. The organisation that scores well on all three dimensions, because it has excellent approaches, fully deployed and continuously reviewed for improvement, is best placed to achieve sustainable success.
